2021 Farm Goals

Every year between Christmas and New Years I sit down with my farm journal and write out a set of goals for myself for the year. I also have the kids pick 3 things they want to work on for the year. I feel like 2020 was a year of reflection. We didn’t move anything forward really just maintained and worked the kinks out of a few things. All that being said this year I want to try some new things and am taking a break from others as a result.

Cows

Pigs

  • Nothing really new with the pigs.
  • We started a new batch of pigs in December that will go to the butcher the first of April.
  • Will evaluate from there and determine if we want to do another batch.

Goats

  • We sold Hot Chocolate and Brown Sugar in the fall of 2020 in preparation for winter.
  • December 1st we put Lovey and Jazzi in with Turbo to be bred
  • We will likely sell whatever babies we get. Need to decide if we should sell them earlier or we want to continue with the fall sales.

Chickens

  • We are taking at least a year off from meat chickens at least at the production level
  • We have rats in the chicken coop that are driving me absolutely crazy. So hopefully taking a season off we can get rid of the rats.
  • Will move all the birds out to the large outdoor run from like Memorial Day to at least Labor Day.

Chukars

  • Trying something new and this is the boys project.
  • Will build a raised 8’x15′ flight pen with a 4′ covered section for feeding and watering inside of the existing run.
  • Will need to figure out a way to block under the flight pen off at times

Orchard

  • Need to replace some of the fences around the trees using cattle panels
  • Need to mulch around the trees
  • Need to sign up for chip drop for the mulch needs
  • Will plant the vining vegetables in that garden again since they did well there with the fence around it.

Garden

  • Need to put more thought into how to use the raised bed space most effectively
  • I think I want to do a tunnel trellis with a cattle panel

Greenhouse

  • Use the windows in the chicken coop and build a permanent greenhouse.
  • Gravel the floor
  • Reuse any of the frame that we can for shelves
